- Kerry Washington’s Walk of Fame Moment: A Star For a Star
After decades of gracing our screens and redefining what it means to be a powerhouse in Hollywood, Kerry Washington finally cemented her place—literally—on December 2, 2024, when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Honored for her television achievements, this moment wasn’t just a win for Washington; it was a dream come true for her biggest fan—her dad, Earl Washington. “I can’t believe I get to live this dream while my father is here to witness it,” she told People magazine, with her father visibly beaming in the crowd. Let’s just say, Kerry’s dad had every right to be the proudest man on Hollywood Boulevard that day. A Star Born in Scandal—and Beyond Washington has been serving iconic roles for over two decades, but let’s not bury the lede: Scandal’s Olivia Pope was her crown jewel, making her the first Black woman to headline a primetime network drama in nearly 40 years. That alone deserves a star! Critics hailed her nuanced performance as one of the most compelling in modern television. But Kerry’s legacy didn’t start there. Remember Chenille in Save the Last Dance ? How about Della Bea Robinson in Ray ? She stole every scene as Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four and gave us chills as Broomhilda in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained . Washington isn’t just an actress; she’s a storyteller, capable of embodying characters with depth, grace, and fire. A Black Star Shines Bright Washington’s induction is not just personal; it’s historic. She joins a small, elite club of Black women on the Walk of Fame, including legends like Dorothy Dandridge, Whoopi Goldberg, and Halle Berry. And as the star count grows, Kerry’s contribution underscores the necessity of representation and honoring the voices that have shaped Hollywood. Ties to Africa and Legacy Washington’s celebration wouldn’t be complete without her family, including her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, a Nigerian-American actor and former NFL star. Together, they represent a cross-cultural powerhouse that speaks to Kerry’s deep connection to her African heritage. Her star isn’t just for her; it’s for her family, her fans, and a generation of Black actresses she’s inspired. Critics Weigh In Critics are already calling this honor “long overdue” and “a rare but welcome nod to an actress who has redefined Hollywood’s leading lady.” Some joked, “Finally, Olivia Pope handled the Walk of Fame!” A Legacy Set in Stone Whether she’s commanding the screen, advocating for justice, or making her dad’s dreams come true, Kerry Washington’s star is more than just a piece of brass—it’s a testament to a career built on talent, resilience, and sheer star power. And for the rest of us? It’s just another reason to binge-watch Scandal for the millionth time. TAGS: KERRY WASHINGTON | KERRY WASHINGTON HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

- Netflix Denies Nigerian Exit, But We’re Not Buying the Drama Just Yet!
In a move that feels more like a soap opera than a corporate announcement, Netflix has officially shot down rumors that it’s leaving Nigeria. Yes, despite whispers at the 2024 Zuma Film Festival- inspired by Victor Okhai, president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria’s comments and subsequent remarks from filmmaker Kunle Afolayan , whose remarks inspired suggestions that the streaming giant was quietly packing its bags, (since they had stopped commissioning new Nigerian content), Netflix is sticking around. "We are not exiting Nigeria," an official Netflix spokesperson boldly declared, adding, "We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories," reiterating their commitment to supporting the Nigerian film industry [source: The Street Journal Back row (From L-R): Banky W, Ted Sarandos (Netflix Chief Content Officer), Kate Henshaw, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Felipe Tewes (Netflix Italian & African Originals Director), Omoni Oboli, Ben Amadasun (Netflix Africa Licensing Director) and Akin Omotoso Front Row (L-R) Mo Abudu, Adesua Etomi, Dorothy Ghettuba (Netflix African Originals lead) , Kunle Afolayan, Kemi Adetiba and Ramsey Noah. Because nothing says “we’re not leaving” like telling people you’re not leaving, right? Maybe Netflix just couldn’t resist a little more Anikulapo or Blackbook —two Nigerian films that, let’s be honest, have been major cash cows for the platform. They certainly aren’t going to miss the chance to have Nollywood lead the charge in global streaming domination. So, in case you missed it, Netflix is definitely not leaving. Or are they? This denial aims to reassure the public and stakeholders of Netflix’s ongoing presence and investment in the Nigerian market despite industry concerns over reduced local production. Afolayan described his statements as a “wake-up call” for the Nigerian film industry to take control of its distribution and reduce dependency on international platforms. For those of you still living under a rock (or Amazon Prime’s quick exit from Nigeria in 2019), let’s just remind you that this is not exactly a brand-new cliffhanger. Amazon Prime came, made a splash, and then—poof!—vanished almost as quickly as they arrived, leaving behind a faint trail of unfulfilled expectations and a few confused subscribers. Meanwhile, Netflix has raked in millions with hits like King of Boys, Shanty Town, and Blood Sisters , not to mention a growing treasure trove of Nigerian original content. Is Netflix doubling down on Nigeria because of those sweet, sweet Netflix and chill numbers? Or is it just playing the long game while waiting for the next big Nollywood blockbuster to come their way? We’re watching. Honestly, who wouldn’t be? Stay tuned for the next episode, because this Nigerian streaming saga is far from over. While we all wait for the dust to settle, Netflix's reassurances still ring a little hollow. After all, it’s not like we've never seen a major streaming platform pull out of a market before. So, while Netflix may be sticking around—for now—don’t be too surprised if we wake up to an unexpected plot twist in the coming months. You just never know when Netflix might change its mind. But hey, if they leave, at least we’ve got Squid Game to keep us company—right?
- Iconic Christmas Movies (Part One)
With only 7 days left until the big day (but who’s counting?), the Christmas cheer is already simmering, promising cozy evenings by the fireplace, cups overflowing with cocoa, and a cinematic banquet for the soul. And what better way to stoke the festive fire than with a heartwarming movie marathon? Fun fact: Did you know some platforms pay you to watch Christmas classics? Recently, Cable TV offered to pay $2,500 to someone to watch 25 Christmas movies in 25 days. Chile, I’d do it for free. Here are five iconic gems that unfailingly kindle the Christmas spirit: 1. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) is a must-watch. This timeless classic follows George Bailey, a man at a crossroads on Christmas Eve. A compassionate yet disillusioned man, George Bailey contemplates ending his life on Christmas Eve, feeling his worth at rock bottom. But just as he stands on a bridge, grappling with his existence, an angel named Clarence appears, eager to earn his wings. Clarence shows George what life in Bedford Falls would’ve been like if George never existed. This powerful journey opens George’s eyes to his profound impact on those around him. This quintessential movie is an all-time classic for me due to its powerful themes of hope, gratitude, selflessness, and the significance of community. Through George’s journey, you discover the value of empathy, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the season—a reminder for us to cherish the present and appreciate the people around us. 2. HOME ALONE “Home Alone” is an annual must-watch – a cherished piece of holiday magic that has nestled its way into the hearts of many, including me, for generations. Produced in 1990 under Chris Columbus’s direction and John Hughes’s creative genius, this iconic masterpiece celebrates childhood, resilience, and the enchantment of the festive season. It’s not just about a boy accidentally left behind during Christmas vacation; it’s an evocative exploration of youthful resourcefulness and unexpected strength in adversity. Macaulay Culkin’s portrayal of Kevin McCallister is legendary, showcasing a perfect blend of wit, charm, and the ingenuity of a child defending himself against hapless burglars. What makes this movie resonate so deeply isn’t just the slapstick humor or the ingenious booby traps; it’s the way it captures the essence of family, the magic of the holidays, and the joy of discovering inner courage. Through laughter, heartwarming moments, and unforgettable lines, “Home Alone” reminds us that amid chaos, the warmth of home and family bonds remain steadfast, echoing the true spirit of Christmas. 3. LOVE ACTUALLY “Love Actually” (2003) is a delightful tapestry of interconnected love stories unfolding during the festive season. Directed by Richard Curtis, the film navigates through multiple narratives, each depicting a unique facet of love against London’s bustling backdrop at Christmastime. From budding romances to heartaches of unspoken affection, “Love Actually” portrays the spectrum of human emotions in relationships. It feels like peeking into the lives of people you might know – each navigating their romantic entanglements, insecurities, and heartwarming moments. As the film unravels, it feels like being embraced by the warm glow of Christmas lights, evoking laughter, tears, and a sense of familiarity. 4. MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947), a heartfelt classic directed by Les Mayfield, transports us to a world where belief meets reality in the most enchanting way. Centered around Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough), who claims to be the real Santa Claus, it spreads hope and wonder during Christmas. Set against the bustling holiday rush in New York City, the film evokes a sense of wonder and nostalgia, reminding us of the importance of faith and the magic of childhood innocence. Attenborough’s portrayal of Kris Kringle is captivating, infusing the character with warmth and sincerity that makes you want to believe in the extraordinary. “Miracle on 34th Street” embodies the true spirit of Christmas, encouraging us to embrace the joy of the season and the power of goodwill. It’s a heartwarming journey that celebrates the essence of belief, family, and the enduring magic within the human heart. 5. ELF Elf is a 2003 Christmas comedy that’s become a modern holiday classic for good reason. It’s a whimsical whirlwind through the North Pole and back, starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, a human raised by Santa’s elves. Ferrell’s infectious enthusiasm and childlike wonder are the driving forces of this film, as Buddy travels to New York City to find his biological father and rediscover the true meaning of Christmas. The film’s humor stems from Buddy’s naiveté about the real world. He believes in Santa wholeheartedly and takes everything literally, leading to some hilarious fish-out-of-water moments. From his literal interpretation of department store Santas to his enthusiastic embrace of pop culture references that are decades old, Buddy’s innocence is a constant source of laughs. And Elf is more than just silly jokes. It’s a heartwarming story about family, friendship, and the importance of believing in yourself. Buddy’s journey to find his father is full of obstacles, but his unwavering optimism and determination eventually win the day. He teaches those around him the true meaning of the Christmas spirit, reminding us that it’s not about presents, but about love, joy, and giving. Which of these iconic movies stands out for you? So, grab your loved ones, watch, and review the movies together. Lots of Xoxo—Sahndra.

- Amplifying African Voices: The Enduring Impact of Souleymane Cissé at SVAFF 2024
As the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) celebrated its 15th anniversary, it continued to serve as a powerful platform for amplifying the rich tapestry of African cinema. This year’s theme, "Amplifying African Voices in Global Cinema," resonated deeply, especially in the wake of the Icons Awards ceremony held on Sunday, October 13th, where the legendary filmmaker Souleymane Cissé was honored. At 84, Cissé stands as a monumental figure in African cinema—a living testament to the rich history and evolution of storytelling from the continent. He is indeed one of the last remaining elders, making it a significant honor to celebrate him. During the ceremony, Cissé shared a poignant message for both emerging and established filmmakers: "We need to look back and learn from what those of us before did." His words served as a clarion call for the next generation to recognize the foundational work laid down by pioneers like himself, Ousmane Sembène, Djibril Diop Mambéty, Med Hondo, Sarah Maldoror, and Haile Gerima. As he sat alongside these cinematic giants, one could feel the reverence in the room, with fellow icon Dash herself visibly starstruck by his presence. It is a rare opportunity to engage with a filmmaker who has shaped the narrative landscape of Africa. Born on April 21, 1940, Cissé belongs to a pioneering generation of African filmmakers who emerged in the post-colonial period, focusing on African identity, history, and culture through cinema. Other notable filmmakers from his era include: Ousmane Sembène (Senegal) – Often referred to as the "father of African cinema," he passed away in 2007. Djibril Diop Mambéty (Senegal) – Known for his avant-garde films, especially Touki Bouki and Hyenas , he passed away in 1998. Med Hondo (Mauritania) – A revolutionary filmmaker whose work tackled colonialism and migration, he passed away in 2019. Sarah Maldoror (France/Angola) – A pioneering woman in African cinema known for Sambizanga , she passed away in 2020. Haile Gerima (Ethiopia) – Known for films like Sankofa and Teza , Gerima is still active today. Cissé's insights remind us of the importance of heritage in filmmaking. His work, which often focuses on themes of identity, history, and culture, has paved the way for new voices to emerge and flourish. As the current president of FESPACO, the prestigious Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, Cissé is dedicated to nurturing upcoming talent, ensuring that African narratives continue to resonate on a global scale. Souleymane Cissé's voice has significantly contributed to amplifying African narratives on the global stage by showcasing the depth and richness of the continent's stories, inviting international audiences to engage with African culture in a profound way. His pioneering films, such as Yeelen (which captivated audiences at Cannes), reflect a stark and beautiful visual style that marries traditional storytelling with cinematic innovation. This mastery has paved the way for a new generation of filmmakers, including notable directors like Abderrahmane Sissako, whose work continues to resonate worldwide; Wanuri Kahiu, known for her bold explorations of contemporary themes; and Haile Gerima, who keeps the legacy of African storytelling alive through his thought-provoking narratives. Cissé didn’t merely walk the path—he ran, creating a legacy that inspires others to reclaim their narratives amidst the distractions of modern cinema. His journey raises the question: will someone revive that strikingly beautiful style that once captured the world's imagination? The festival also proudly honored a distinguished lineup of filmmakers, including John Kani , RMD , and Julie Dash , alongside the legendary Souleymane Cissé . This momentous occasion, orchestrated by the visionary founder Chike Nwoffiah , celebrated not just individual achievements but also the collective spirit of African cinema. As Cissé, a titan of the industry, took the stage, his presence served as a poignant reminder of the rich legacy that these filmmakers represent. Each honoree, from Kani’s profound wisdom to Dash’s trailblazing contributions, underscores the depth and diversity of African narratives. In this vibrant gathering, the legacy of African cinema was both honored and invigorated, inspiring a new generation to carry the torch forward. With 85 films from 38 countries on the program, SVAFF 2024 was a powerful showcase of diverse storytelling and cinematic talent. The festival brought together filmmakers from across the globe, celebrating African narratives with a rich lineup of films and cultures. Young talent was also recognised as 21-year-old Ozie Nzeberibe won the Trailblazer Award, recognizing his rising talent in African cinema. As the festival closed, it was clear that African cinema’s future is bright, built on a foundation of history, wisdom, and boundless creativity. The celebration of Cissé and his contemporaries stood as a powerful call to action for future filmmakers: to carry forward the legacy of storytelling, amplifying African voices on the global stage.

- Sahndra Fon Dufe: What Film Industries Can Learn from the Hollywood Writers & Actors Guild’s Strike
SAG AFTRA members and supporters picket outside of Walt Disney Studios In Burbank. (Photo by Brian Feinzimer/LAist) No new shows? Two weeks ago, I arrived in Los Angeles and sensed a shift in the air. While the usual traffic on the 101 and 405 freeways remained, I noticed unexpected congestion on other major streets. Coming from Lagos where traffic woes are commonplace, I couldn’t help but wonder about the cause of this sudden bottleneck in LA. Little did I know that my arrival coincided with an impending strike between the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) / Screen Actors Guild (SAG) – the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television (AMPTP). As a creative, this revelation prompted deep reflection on the strike’s implications for the government, the sector, and the artistic community. The Writers Guild initiated the strike on May 2, 2023. The momentum intensified on July 14, 2023, when SAG-AFTRA joined in solidarity with the writers. The unified action was prompted by various reasons, including disputes over streaming residuals, the regulation of self-tape auditions, concerns about AI potentially replacing actors’ jobs, and issues with contract renewals. The guilds brought AMPTP member companies to a halt, impacting writing, revising, pitching, and future projects. The strike’s impact reverberates from LA streets to our screens, causing chaos in America’s TV industry. It’s more than just a strike; it’s a metaphorical battle against injustice, paving the way for a fairer and more entertaining entertainment landscape. Buckle up, folks. The Financial Impact of the Strike on Hollywood’s Creative Sector Well, well, well, déjà vu strikes again. 15 years ago , the 2008 strike shook Hollywood off its glamorous pedestal, resulting in a staggering $3 billion loss. Jack Kyser , the Chief Economist for the LA County Economic Development Corp, breaks it down: $981 million vanished from scripted TV series production spending, $1.3 billion bid farewell to caterers, valets, and other industry-related businesses. The Golden Globe Awards suffered a $60 million downsizing, and writers and crew lost a whopping $772 million in wages. A real financial gut punch. Experts are warning that the strike’s impact might be even worse this time. Beloved TV shows face airplay disruptions, movies have incomplete scripts, and jobs are suddenly on hiatus. Hollywood is in for a rough ride, and California’s economy feels the sting. One major film production’s daily contribution of $250,000 to the State’s economy is now a distant memory. Cash crunch, anyone? As the strike looms larger, it could leave a trail of destruction, potentially affecting 20,000 workers across 600 productions. Approximately, $81 billion in direct wages from 800,000 jobs in the film and TV industry might vanish into thin air if this strike drags on. Kevin Klowden from the Milken Institute shares similar concerns when he said, “Could we see more? Absolutely.” Television’s essence relies on brilliant writers creating unforgettable characters and captivating stories, brought to life by talented actors delivering powerful performances. The strike emphasises their indispensable contributions as they advocate for improved terms in collaboration with studios and networks. The absence of these creative professionals significantly impacts the entire entertainment industry, including American movie productions abroad. Shonda Rhimes , writer/producer of Bridgerton , joins the strike by affirming, “I’m a writer on strike, so for the next few months or however long it goes, I won’t be putting pen to paper.” SAG AFTRA and WGA members and supporters picket outside of Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. (Photo by Brian Feinzimer/LAist) Residuals and the Writers’ Quest for Equity Residuals are vital for many writers, especially as consumption patterns in the entertainment industry evolve. Hollywood figures, such as the creators of Stranger Things , Matt and Ross Duffer, have supported this claim. They tweeted , “Writing does not stop when filming begins.” Meredith Stiehm, President of the Writers’ Guild of America, emphasised the need for payment reviews for writers in an open letter to Netflix and Comcast, stating, “Shareholders should send a message to Comcast that if the company could afford to spend $130 million on executive compensation last year, it can afford to pay the estimated $34 million per year that writers are asking for in contract improvements and put an end to this disruptive strike.” Job security amidst the development of A.I Technology’s disruptive force extends to America’s film industry as well. Today, many writers work multiple jobs to support themselves and their families while holding onto their writing jobs. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) gains prominence, studios consider integrating tech writing into the scriptwriting process for greater flexibility. However, the union actively seeks protection against it. Uncovering the Core Issues The Writers’ strike centres around the demand for improved residuals from streaming media, the inclusion of all types of media in the latest Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), “Mandatory Staffing” and “Duration of Employment” terms in their contract, as well as access to pension and healthcare funds for all members. Prominent show writers like Tina Fey, Quinta Brunson , and Debra J Fisher have joined the strike. Similarly, over 1,000 SAG members have also joined the strike, including esteemed A-listers like Lupita Nyong’o, Rachel McAdams, and Bob Odenkirk. Today’s television landscape has evolved to embrace diverse forms of visual media. Writers now specialise in streaming, digital media, and other mainstream platforms that align with current audience consumption habits. However, despite adding new coverage assets, writers’ paychecks have seen a significant drop of 23% over the last decade due to inflation rates. The guild highlights , “The companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writers’ pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels.” SAG AFTRA and WGA members and supporters picket outside of Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. (Photo by Brian Feinzimer/LAist) Harmonising all writers’ interests TV writer Franchesca Ramsey debunks a widespread belief surrounding the writers’ strike. She explains that not all film and TV writers are wealthy and discusses the challenges they face, especially with the impact of streaming services on their income. Ramsey mentions ‘The Bear’ on FX, where a new staff writer, Alex O’Keefe , earned very little during the nine-week writer’s room. Despite a $5,000 minimum weekly payment, after expenses for managers (10%), agents (10%), lawyers (5%), business managers (5%), and taxes (4%), writers are left with only about $30,000 to cover living expenses for an uncertain period. The unpredictable nature of show success and the disappointingly low streaming residuals further add to the challenges writers face in sustaining themselves. “Then The Bear comes out on TV and it’s a huge hit on streaming and when the residual check comes, it’s nothing because you barely get any money for residuals on streaming. So this is what the Writer’s Strike is fighting for. Fixed residual income based on streaming viewership. Restrictions on mini rooms so that you aren’t overworked and you aren’t underpaid,” she explained. The strike’s impact reaches beyond Los Angeles, as the television industry is a global enterprise with shows across borders. The writers’ strike showcases the interconnectedness of the entertainment ecosystem, where creativity and talent transcend geographical boundaries. Its resolution could serve as a model for addressing labour disputes in other regions, inspiring worldwide conversations about fair compensation and creative rights. Learning Opportunities for African Film Industries The impact of the writers’ strike is worth exploring as it sheds light on the situation of African film industries. The absence of writers might result in a lack of new shows and fresh content. Nevertheless, this presents an opening to expand into global markets and gain acknowledgement. Nigeria, South Africa, and other African countries have dynamic film industries with distinct narratives that are eager to be showcased to a broader audience. The persistence of these issues in Hollywood from the early 1900s should serve as a beacon for us in Africa to enhance our movie industries’ structure. As we strive to make our film industries a global export, it is essential to unite and align the interests of actors, writers, producers, and directors in the development of African cinema. We must apply these lessons to the film industries in Africa as we navigate the writers’ strike’s intricacies and its implications for television’s future. Standardising the sector is vital for African cinema to reach its potential and elevate the quality and impact of African shows to captivate audiences worldwide. Drawing from the practices of creative counterparts, film bodies in Africa should implement policies that foster a cohesive and enabling environment for stakeholders. Taking inspiration from the example of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (now known as ARCON), which standardised advertising operations in August 2022 through levies and promoting local content, movie bodies in Africa can adopt similar measures to drive the growth of the creative industry.

First off, let’s talk about the mayor’s gala . You can’t imagine the elegance and allure as we mingled with the city’s officials, sipping exquisite beverages and engaging in conversation with dignitaries left and right. It’s like a real-life episode of “Scandal,” minus the sensational conflicts (or maybe there was some, who knows?). I was amidst it all, witnessing the start of a fresh chapter, while gracefully navigating through the crowd of influential individuals. So, there I was, minding my own business, the next day when Oprah Winfrey suddenly showed up before me. I mean, who needs to breathe when you can see Oprah, right? And as a bonus, she bestowed upon us some cool pearls of wisdom . You can only imagine the sheer disbelief and excitement coursing through my veins when I realized who I was breathing next to. Did I manage to keep my cool, or did I squeal like a fangirl meeting her idol? Alongside The Master Chief, other Powerful black actors spoke of healing which soothes the soul, in a color named Purple; previously Spielberg’d, now Oprah’d. Next, I wandered through the author's pavilion , feeling all literary and important. I mean, who needs a Pulitzer when you can casually peruse through a book fair with all-black books ? Oh, and did I mention I got to check out the famous Coke studio? No, not the soda, but a legit music paradise. I was practically captivated by the harmonious sound of carbonated melodies. Oh, and guess what? I graced the cover of a magazine. Move over, fashion icons, there’s a new star in town. People were practically tripping over themselves to catch a glimpse of my fabulousness. LOL! Of course, the NOLA beans and sausages I devoured at the local restaurants might have contributed to that allure. Who knew legumes could be so enticing? But wait, there’s more! I reveled in the exquisite places on French Street and Bourbon Street , gracefully walking and feigning elegance, stepping ever so elegantly, pretending to be sophisticated. Jazz, Beauty, and Food. I even had to lug around bags full of groceries like a superhero. Move aside, Hulk, Sahndra Fon Dufe is here to save the day with her superhuman grocery-carrying abilities, in all this bayou heat!! Now, get ready for this one. I lived in an Airbnb without a single soul in sight customer service-wise. But fear not, a concierge from the Philippines magically appeared whenever I lost my freaking door code. Happened 2 million times. It was like playing hide-and-seek with invisible forces. An excitement like no other, a thrilling experience! Oh, and the best part? I bonded with other Africans, and we shared laughter, stories, and a newfound appreciation for the phrase “blackity black black.” And guess who I met during this enlightening experience? The Vice President herself. She taught me a valuable lesson: trust black women. Well, who am I to argue with the VP? Trust granted! Now, let’s set the record straight about the free stuff. As it turns out, the gifts didn’t descend from Oprah herself (I know, disappointment!). They came from the amazing partner brands who wanted to make us feel like royalty. So, shoutout to the real heroes behind the scenes, bringing us fantastic swag and making us feel like Beyoncé at a lemonade stand. My absolute favorite is this fan from Hulu that spins and makes sounds like Chukbukwa, the alien from Planet Whatchamacallit. It even has a catchy phrase on it , because what’s a fan without a philosophical slogan? Oh, hold the phone! I also met Beyoncé’s stepdad. Now that’s a whole new level of extraordinary! That’s some next-level, beyond-regular stuff right there. I mean, who needs regularity when you can casually bump into someone who’s part of Queen Bey’s family tree? Talk about rubbing elbows with the elite! Either way, meeting Beyoncé’s stepdad is definitely a memorable encounter that’s bound to be the highlight of any conversation. Regular? Absolutely not. That’s a story for the ages! Oh, my apologies for missing that exciting part! You attended the mayor’s introductory party and witnessed Missy Elliott’s mind-blowing concert? Girl, you really know how to party with the best of them! But wait, there’s more! I then found myself at a Jill Scott-Missy Elliott concert that was out of this world — literally! Picture this: Missy Elliott, the legendary queen of hip-hop, descending from a spaceship to perform. Talk about next-level theatrics and graphics on overload! It was a spectacle of epic proportions, leaving you in awe and wondering if you accidentally stepped into a sci-fi movie. The dramatic flair and jaw-dropping visuals made it a concert experience like no other. And so, my Essence experience was a rollercoaster of Oprah-induced fangirl death, hilarious encounters, and unforgettable moments. Who says life can’t be a real-life entertaining sitcom? Because, trust me, Sahndra Fon Dufe knows how to turn any ordinary day into an extraordinary adventure. Absolutely, an unforgettable event! It was the groundbreaking first-ever Africa Day at Essence. Brace Yourself for the Thrilling Sequel in Part Two

African fashion is rapidly attracting global attention, and Guzangs is at the forefront of this movement. With years of experience in showcasing the stories of African fashion designers worldwide, the brand has now expanded its reach to Nigeria. This strategic move aims to identify top fashion talents in the country and launch its ambitious plan of establishing personalized connections with fashion designers across the continent. This initiative is encapsulated in the unique event titled “The Guzangs Experience,” promising a one-of-a-kind platform for collaboration and celebration within the African fashion industry. African fashion embodies the spirit of passion, resilience, and vibrancy that is synonymous with Africa. It intricately weaves these elements into every fabric, creating styles that stand out, especially on the international stage. Guzangs has evolved into a vibrant hub for fashion talents to showcase their pieces, garnering essential exposure for life-changing opportunities. The brand has strategically positioned itself not only to support African fashion creatives but also to embrace social media influencers, photographers, videographers, and other creatives across the continent. This holistic approach fosters a collaborative and dynamic ecosystem within the African fashion industry. On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the city of Lagos witnessed a gathering of Nigeria’s leading fashion designers, stylists, influencers, actors, musicians, and various other individuals in the arts. They convened to discuss the timely emergence of the concept behind Guzangs, recognizing its significance and impact on the fashion industry. Idelle Taye , the founder of Guzangs, passionately expressed the remarkable progress that African fashion has achieved over the years and emphasized the importance of sharing this progress with the world. She highlighted the diversity within African fashion, noting that it extends far beyond iconic styles like Ankara and Danshiki, and underscored the significance of showcasing this diversity through a platform that celebrates it. Taye also discussed the readiness of African fashion to take a leading role in global fashion trends, stating, “I see African fashion designers being stakeholders, having a seat at the table.” This reflects her belief in the potential of African designers to contribute significantly to the global fashion landscape. The event commenced with a warm welcome message from Maliz Mahop , an advocate for the African creative industry, who introduced the Guzangs brand to the esteemed guests. She highlighted the brand’s remarkable achievements within just three years of existence, showcasing renowned names such as Afrokrema, Muyishime, Margaux Wong, and Ugo Monye , among others. Their designs were displayed on a global stage, earning well-deserved global recognition. Reflecting on the potential of African fashion to secure a prominent position on the world stage, Sara Sozzani Maino , a renowned fashion advocate based in Europe and the creative director of Fondazzione Sozzani and CNCC (Conde Nast Commercial Creative), as well as an Advisory Board Member of the Circular Fashion Summit (a United Nations SDG project), emphasized the importance of African designers boldly showcasing their craftsmanship on the international stage. She stressed that creating fashion is not just about making clothes but also about conveying messages and driving changes. For a continent as culturally rich and steeped in traditions as Africa, Sozzani Maino believes that designers from this region should have a strong motivation to showcase their culture and creativity on a global scale. This sentiment reflects the potential impact African fashion can have in influencing global fashion trends while celebrating its unique heritage and craftsmanship. Amina Isa , Founder of Koy and Victoria’s and Lala’s Lagos, delved deeper into this heritage by highlighting the richness and diversity of African fashion, noting that it extends beyond mere clothing. She described African fashion as the most diverse, interesting, and beautiful type of fashion globally. Isa expressed the need to continue the momentum in showcasing African fashion, believing that it is on a trajectory towards great success and recognition worldwide. In fostering the mass appeal of African fashion domestically, Daniel Etim-Effiong emphasized the importance of making African fashion accessible to the Nigerian market while ensuring its sophistication for global appeal. He likened this approach to the “Pure Water” model, where he said, “Fashion, the way we learned from the global scene is perceived to be very sophisticated but maybe what African fashion designers need to learn is how to break it down, bringing it closer to the people.” Imanse, a Nigerian artist, emphasized the importance of improved collaborations among creatives to showcase the power of black heritage more effectively. She believes that designers should be open-minded and offer opportunities to committed, professional, and hardworking fashion designers, as this could lead to groundbreaking success. Deyemi Okanlawon , actor and producer of the latest blockbuster “All is Fair in Love,” validated this notion by sharing his understanding of the fusion of fashion and movie production. He recounted how he was inspired by Hollywood sensation Tom Ford’s style in a movie, leading him to integrate fashion into his film projects. When working on “All is Fair in Love” in 2023, Okanlawon collaborated with Ayodeji Ayodele to costume his cast, highlighting the seamless collaboration that didn’t strain their budgets. He emphasized the importance of such collaborations in creating better opportunities for the industry on a global scale. Other creative industry cremes de la creme in attendance included Eso Dike, Enyinna Nwige, Ijeoma Balogun, and Nkechi Balogun Fashion in Africa demonstrates its ability to extend beyond its boundaries, encompassing multiple industries within and beyond the creative realm. In concluding the event, Idelle Taye expressed her strong belief in the potential of African Fashion on the international scene, saying, “African Fashion is a gem that needs to be nurtured. As we work hard at Guzangs to rediscover the craft and heritage of Fashion in the continent, we will continue to see increased global visibility and exponential financial growth for African fashion creatives.” Guzangs, therefore, presents itself as a viable channel of discovery through which fashion enthusiasts from across the globe can take a bird’ s-eye view of the continent and marvel in awe at the array of fashion discoveries resident within the continent of Africa. - RMD at Essence: A Career that Transcends Time- Essence 2023 FASCINATING POINTS FROM THE LEGENDARY ACTOR
Essence Fest 2023, presented by Coca cola’s theme was about culture, and African creatives were incorporated into the program, including WizKid and Tems playing at the Dome Mercedes, on the same stage as Megan thee Stallion , and hip-hop legends like Ms. Lauryn Hill . Similarly, for the first time since Essence’s 29-year history, in NOLA New Orleans, the home of beignets and gumbo, Africa Day was born, starring Nigerian Day hosted by That Good Media on July 1 and Ghana Day on July 2, hosted by Ama Larbi . In a fireside chat organized by That Good Media, a gathering that congregated esteemed Nigerian veterans, A-list celebrities, and emerging talent, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD ) , the newly-appointed member of the Oscar committee and a recent signee with CAA (Creative Artist Agency), made a memorable appearance. RMD exuded style and elegance in a meticulously tailored green ensemble by Ugo Monye , adorned with intricate aso-oke patterns that perfectly reflected Essence’s colors and tones. He embraced the latest trends from head to toe, completing his look with personalized Air Force shoes that proudly showcased the word “Warri.” It was evident that RMD approaches every aspect of his persona, from his attire to his attention to detail and craftsmanship, with utmost dedication and seriousness. As the event’s Special Guest, Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, received a standing ovation from his younger peers in an intimate setting moderated by Olori SuperGal’s Tosin Ajibade . When asked, “Who is RMD?” he replied, “I like to refer to myself as an actor, struggling father, and I currently run a show called Made in Warri. “ A younger colleague Mofe Duncan would soon rise to his feet to address his role model and namesake. On behalf of all young artists listening, he asked what it takes to “stand the test of time” as an Actor- a career status as rare as it is prestigious; RMD stared into the crowd and, with humility in his voice, shared some wisdom to all and sundry. Four quotes, in particular, stood out to me. I’ll share them with you. 1. Don’t fake it. wouldn’t last long Standing the test of time goes beyond looks, swag, and yes, even relationships. It requires grace, a firm dedication to craft, re-inventing one’s self, and being real, i.e. relatable and true to each character you play. This makes performances iconic while also justifying artistic relevance in an ever-changing global film industry. On the subject of work ethic, here is what the Legend shared. 2. Live on your Terms We resonate with this because it encapsulates the essence of personal empowerment and the pursuit of excellence. In an industry as competitive as entertainment, it’s crucial to have a strong sense of self-belief and the determination to take ownership of our lives. RMD’s words remind us that success extends far beyond the stage or screen; it encompasses our entire journey as individuals. By embracing our roles as winners, we empower ourselves to make proactive choices, set ambitious goals, and navigate the ups and downs with resilience. RMD’s advice is a powerful reminder to never settle for mediocrity but to strive for greatness in all aspects of life. Thank you, RMD, for inspiring us to seize control of our destinies and passionately pursue our dreams. Your legendary wisdom continues to motivate and uplift us all. 3. Beyond Craft, contribute towards Sectoral Growth What is an industry without infrastructure? A one-hit wonder, that’s what. Beyond talent, creative sectors around the world desperately require structure, as well as private and public funding to establish themselves as organized factories that churn out film in a sustainable manner. Popular industry outreach “Made in Warri” is RMD’s brainchild. As an indigene of Warri, he developed the show to showcase the rich artistic base resident in the region. Beloved stars like Harry Song , BOVI , AY , and Gordons came from this platform. His contribution sparked the Government’s interest. On the heels of this, RMD became appointed as the Special Adviser to the then Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2008, and later became the commissioner for Culture and Tourism of Delta State, Nigeria in 2009. His tenure ended in 2015. As a former Commissioner, he was able to use his position to foster Government’s involvement, making it a key national export. Today, Asaba is the home of Nollywood, grossing about $9 billion annually in movie production and distribution. 4. Division of Labor We agree. Division of labor is crucial in the realm of film and animation as it allows for specialization and expertise in different aspects of the production process. By assigning specific roles to professionals skilled in those areas, such as directors, writers, cinematographers, animators, and editors, the overall quality of the final product can be greatly enhanced. This efficient allocation of tasks not only streamlines the creative process but also maximizes profitability by leveraging the unique talents of individuals, resulting in a higher return on investment (ROI) for movies and animation projects. RMD’s My success story RMD’s fireside sesh on Nigeria Day at Essence was a captivating reminder to be brave, patient, and true to ourselves in the pursuit of our craft. His wisdom serves as a beautiful inspiration for creatives of all ages, highlighting the importance of keeping it real, prioritizing personal growth and craft & of course, making meaningful contributions to our industries. Legendary. He was honored at Essence 2023, with a standing ovation from his peers, young and old, for -And let’s not forget the exciting news! It was the first-ever Africa Day at Essence, brought to life by the fabulous folks at That Good Media. They sure know how to make history in style!
