Two weeks ago, I arrived in Los Angeles and sensed a shift in the air. While the usual traffic on the 101 and 405 freeways remained, I noticed unexpected congestion on other major streets. Coming from Lagos where traffic woes are commonplace, I couldn’t help but wonder about the cause of this sudden bottleneck in LA. Little did I know that my arrival coincided with an impending strike between the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) / Screen Actors Guild (SAG) – the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television (AMPTP). As a creative, this revelation prompted deep reflection on the strike’s implications for the government, the sector, and the artistic community. The Writers Guild initiated the strike on May 2, 2023. The momentum intensified on July 14, 2023, when SAG-AFTRA joined in solidarity with the writers. The unified action was prompted by various reasons, including disputes over streaming residuals, the regulation of self-tape auditions, concerns about AI potentially replacing actors’ jobs, and issues with contract renewals. The guilds brought AMPTP member companies to a halt, impacting writing, revising, pitching, and future projects. The strike’s impact reverberates from LA streets to our screens, causing chaos in America’s TV industry. It’s more than just a strike; it’s a metaphorical battle against injustice, paving the way for a fairer and more entertaining entertainment landscape. Buckle up, folks. The Financial  Impact of the Strike on Hollywood’s Creative Sector Well, well, well, déjà vu strikes again. 15 years ago , the 2008 strike shook Hollywood off its glamorous pedestal, resulting in a staggering $3 billion loss. Jack Kyser , the Chief Economist for the LA County Economic Development Corp, breaks it down: $981 million vanished from scripted TV series production spending, $1.3 billion bid farewell to caterers, valets, and other industry-related businesses. The Golden Globe Awards suffered a $60 million downsizing, and writers and crew lost a whopping $772 million in wages. A real financial gut punch. Experts are warning that the strike’s impact might be even worse this time. Beloved TV shows face airplay disruptions, movies have incomplete scripts, and jobs are suddenly on hiatus. Hollywood is in for a rough ride, and California’s economy feels the sting. One major film production’s daily contribution of $250,000 to the State’s economy is now a distant memory. Cash crunch, anyone? As the strike looms larger, it could leave a trail of destruction, potentially affecting 20,000 workers across 600 productions. Approximately, $81 billion in direct wages from 800,000 jobs in the film and TV industry might vanish into thin air if this strike drags on. Kevin Klowden from the Milken Institute shares similar concerns when he said, “Could we see more? Absolutely.” Television’s essence relies on brilliant writers creating unforgettable characters and captivating stories, brought to life by talented actors delivering powerful performances. The strike emphasises their indispensable contributions as they advocate for improved terms in collaboration with studios and networks. The absence of these creative professionals significantly impacts the entire entertainment industry, including American movie productions abroad. Hollywood figures, such as the creators of Stranger Things , Matt and Ross Duffer, have supported this claim. They tweeted , “Writing does not stop when filming begins.” Meredith Stiehm, President of the Writers’ Guild of America, emphasised the need for payment reviews for writers in an open letter to Netflix and Comcast, stating, “Shareholders should send a message to Comcast that if the company could afford to spend $130 million on executive compensation last year, it can afford to pay the estimated $34 million per year that writers are asking for in contract improvements and put an end to this disruptive strike.” Job security amidst the development of A.I Technology’s disruptive force extends to America’s film industry as well. Today, many writers work multiple jobs to support themselves and their families while holding onto their writing jobs. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) gains prominence, studios consider integrating tech writing into the scriptwriting process for greater flexibility. However, the union actively seeks protection against it. Uncovering the Core Issues The Writers’ strike centres around the demand for improved residuals from streaming media, the inclusion of all types of media in the latest Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), “Mandatory Staffing” and “Duration of Employment” terms in their contract, as well as access to pension and healthcare funds for all members. Prominent show writers like Tina Fey, Quinta Brunson , and Debra J Fisher  have joined the strike. Similarly, over 1,000 SAG members have also joined the strike, including esteemed A-listers like Lupita Nyong’o, Rachel McAdams, and Bob Odenkirk. Today’s television landscape has evolved to embrace diverse forms of visual media. Writers now specialise in streaming, digital media, and other mainstream platforms that align with current audience consumption habits. However, despite adding new coverage assets, writers’ paychecks have seen a significant drop of 23% over the last decade due to inflation rates. She explains that not all film and TV writers are wealthy and discusses the challenges they face, especially with the impact of streaming services on their income. Ramsey mentions ‘The Bear’ on FX, where a new staff writer, Alex O’Keefe , earned very little during the nine-week writer’s room. Despite a $5,000 minimum weekly payment, after expenses for managers (10%), agents (10%), lawyers (5%), business managers (5%),  and taxes (4%), writers are left with only about $30,000 to cover living expenses for an uncertain period. The unpredictable nature of show success and the disappointingly low streaming residuals further add to the challenges writers face in sustaining themselves. “Then The Bear comes out on TV and it’s a huge hit on streaming and when the residual check comes, it’s nothing because you barely get any money for residuals on streaming. So this is what the Writer’s Strike is fighting for. Fixed residual income based on streaming viewership. Restrictions on mini rooms so that you aren’t overworked and you aren’t underpaid,” she explained. Learning Opportunities for African Film Industries The impact of the writers’ strike is worth exploring as it sheds light on the situation of African film industries. The absence of writers might result in a lack of new shows and fresh content. Nevertheless, this presents an opening to expand into global markets and gain acknowledgement. Nigeria, South Africa, and other African countries have dynamic film industries with distinct narratives that are eager to be showcased to a broader audience. The persistence of these issues in Hollywood from the early 1900s should serve as a beacon for us in Africa to enhance our movie industries’ structure. As we strive to make our film industries a global export, it is essential to unite and align the interests of actors, writers, producers, and directors in the development of African cinema. We must apply these lessons to the film industries in Africa as we navigate the writers’ strike’s intricacies and its implications for television’s future. Standardising the sector is vital for African cinema to reach its potential and elevate the quality and impact of African shows to captivate audiences worldwide. Drawing from the practices of creative counterparts, film bodies in Africa should implement policies that foster a cohesive and enabling environment for stakeholders. Taking inspiration from the example of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (now known as ARCON), which standardised advertising operations in August 2022 through levies and promoting local content, movie bodies in Africa can adopt similar measures to drive the growth of the creative industry.

And as a bonus, she bestowed upon us some cool pearls of wisdom . You can only imagine the sheer disbelief and excitement coursing through my veins when I realized who I was breathing next to. Did I manage to keep my cool, or did I squeal like a fangirl meeting her idol? Alongside The Master Chief, other Powerful black actors spoke of healing which soothes the soul, in a color named Purple; previously Spielberg’d, now Oprah’d. Next, I wandered through the author's pavilion , feeling all literary and important. I mean, who needs a Pulitzer when you can casually peruse through a book fair with all-black books ? Oh, and did I mention I got to check out the famous Coke studio? No, not the soda, but a legit music paradise. I was practically captivated by the harmonious sound of carbonated melodies. Oh, and guess what? I graced the cover of a magazine. Move over, fashion icons, there’s a new star in town. People were practically tripping over themselves to catch a glimpse of my fabulousness. LOL! Of course, the NOLA beans and sausages I devoured at the local restaurants might have contributed to that allure. Who knew legumes could be so enticing? But wait, there’s more! I reveled in the exquisite places on French Street and Bourbon Street , gracefully walking and feigning elegance, stepping ever so elegantly, pretending to be sophisticated. Jazz, Beauty, and Food. I even had to lug around bags full of groceries like a superhero. Move aside, Hulk, Sahndra Fon Dufe is here to save the day with her superhuman grocery-carrying abilities, in all this bayou heat!! Now, get ready for this one. I lived in an Airbnb without a single soul in sight customer service-wise. But fear not, a concierge from the Philippines magically appeared whenever I lost my freaking door code. Happened 2 million times. It was like playing hide-and-seek with invisible forces. An excitement like no other, a thrilling experience! Oh, and the best part? I bonded with other Africans, and we shared laughter, stories, and a newfound appreciation for the phrase “blackity black black.” And guess who I met during this enlightening experience? The Vice President herself. She taught me a valuable lesson: trust black women. Well, who am I to argue with the VP? Trust granted! Now, let’s set the record straight about the free stuff. As it turns out, the gifts didn’t descend from Oprah herself (I know, disappointment!). They came from the amazing partner brands who wanted to make us feel like royalty. So, shoutout to the real heroes behind the scenes, bringing us fantastic swag and making us feel like Beyoncé at a lemonade stand. My absolute favorite is this fan from Hulu that spins and makes sounds like Chukbukwa, the alien from Planet Whatchamacallit. It even has a catchy phrase on it , because what’s a fan without a philosophical slogan? Oh, hold the phone! I also met Beyoncé’s stepdad. Now that’s a whole new level of extraordinary! That’s some next-level, beyond-regular stuff right there. I mean, who needs regularity when you can casually bump into someone who’s part of Queen Bey’s family tree? Talk about rubbing elbows with the elite! Either way, meeting Beyoncé’s stepdad is definitely a memorable encounter that’s bound to be the highlight of any conversation. Regular? Absolutely not. That’s a story for the ages! Oh, my apologies for missing that exciting part! You attended the mayor’s introductory party and witnessed Missy Elliott’s mind-blowing concert? Girl, you really know how to party with the best of them! But wait, there’s more! I then found myself at a Jill Scott-Missy Elliott concert that was out of this world — literally! Picture this: Missy Elliott, the legendary queen of hip-hop, descending from a spaceship to perform. Talk about next-level theatrics and graphics on overload! It was a spectacle of epic proportions, leaving you in awe and wondering if you accidentally stepped into a sci-fi movie. And so, my Essence experience was a rollercoaster of Oprah-induced fangirl death, hilarious encounters, and unforgettable moments. Who says life can’t be a real-life entertaining sitcom? Idelle Taye , the founder of Guzangs, passionately expressed the remarkable progress that African fashion has achieved over the years and emphasized the importance of sharing this progress with the world. She highlighted the diversity within African fashion, noting that it extends far beyond iconic styles like Ankara and Danshiki, and underscored the significance of showcasing this diversity through a platform that celebrates it. Taye also discussed the readiness of African fashion to take a leading role in global fashion trends, stating, “I see African fashion designers being stakeholders, having a seat at the table.” This reflects her belief in the potential of African designers to contribute significantly to the global fashion landscape. The event commenced with a warm welcome message from Maliz Mahop , an advocate for the African creative industry, who introduced the Guzangs brand to the esteemed guests. He likened this approach to the “Pure Water” model, where he said, “Fashion, the way we learned from the global scene is perceived to be very sophisticated but maybe what African fashion designers need to learn is how to break it down, bringing it closer to the people.” Imanse, a Nigerian artist, emphasized the importance of improved collaborations among creatives to showcase the power of black heritage more effectively. She believes that designers should be open-minded and offer opportunities to committed, professional, and hardworking fashion designers, as this could lead to groundbreaking success. Deyemi Okanlawon , actor and producer of the latest blockbuster “All is Fair in Love,” validated this notion by sharing his understanding of the fusion of fashion and movie production. He recounted how he was inspired by Hollywood sensation Tom Ford’s style in a movie, leading him to integrate fashion into his film projects. Essence Fest 2023, presented by Coca cola’s theme was about culture, and African creatives were incorporated into the program, including WizKid and Tems playing at the Dome Mercedes, on the same stage as Megan thee Stallion , and hip-hop legends like Ms. Lauryn Hill . Similarly, for the first time since Essence’s 29-year history, in NOLA New Orleans, the home of beignets and gumbo, Africa Day was born, starring Nigerian Day hosted by That Good Media on July 1 and Ghana Day on July 2, hosted by Ama Larbi . In a fireside chat organized by That Good Media, a gathering that congregated esteemed Nigerian veterans, A-list celebrities, and emerging talent, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD ) , the newly-appointed member of the Oscar committee and a recent signee with CAA (Creative Artist Agency), made a memorable appearance. RMD exuded style and elegance in a meticulously tailored green ensemble by Ugo Monye , adorned with intricate aso-oke patterns that perfectly reflected Essence’s colors and tones. Beyond Craft, contribute towards Sectoral Growth What is an industry without infrastructure? A one-hit wonder, that’s what. Beyond talent, creative sectors around the world desperately require structure, as well as private and public funding to establish themselves as organized factories that churn out film in a sustainable manner. Black women are shattering barriers and leaving an indelible mark in our world. From notable global figures like Kamala Harris , Ursula Burns , Roz Brewer , and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to Nigerian financial juggernauts like Ireti Samuel-Ogbu , Tomi Somefun, Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe , Miriam Olusanya , Yemisi Edun , and Halima Buba , the limitless achievement of Black women cannot be overemphasized. Oprah Winfrey: A Champion of Black Women’s Emancipation: Every cause has a pioneering force, and Oprah Winfrey , an influential figure in the media industry, unmistakably comes as a prominent advocate for Black women’s emancipation. Her name echoing across Media, Entertainment, Social Justice, Youth, and Women Empowerment seems to take the cake — especially regarding “mind” liberation. Joelle Monique, a Black American columnist, highlighted the transformative impact “The Color Purple” has on Black American culture, especially among women. In her words, “This theme of Black women helping other Black women is essential because this isn’t the narrative of Black women we see, but this theme is essential to the community’s success.” This Story holds a significant place in American culture; its creation, cast selection, and production instill lessons of resilience, rewriting the Black narrative. Oprah recognizes the importance of shedding light on the struggles and sisterhood within the community. Her efforts to secure the movie rights and meeting with Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule led to the reimagined 2023 release. The Journey to Color Purple: Oprah’s journey to starring in the film was challenging. Following episodes of discouragement, she found solace in prayer and surrender from Van DeVenter’s timeless hymn “ I surrender all .” In an unexpected turn of fate, a phone call from Spielberg secured her the role, reaffirming her belief in Divine alignment. Hey there, movie buffs! Looking for something to spice up your weekend movie marathon? I’ve got two fantastic recommendations that are bound to captivate and entertain you. First up is “WE MOVE” by Collier Noir and Metanoia Productions . This film kicks off with Efe (played by Eso Dike ) and Uloh (played by Inem King ), who are thrilled to receive their American visas, to “japa” from Nigeria to “the overseas” and start a new life -but just as they’re about to embark on their new journey, a tragic incident threatens to derail their dreams. “WE MOVE” is a rollercoaster of emotions. The cinematography and aerial shots are stunning, drawing you deep into the story. I particularly enjoyed the “malaria-America” song and the Albuquerque joke — spoiler alert; they were hilarious and added a lighthearted touch to the film’s serious undertones, since the film addresses a phenomenon deeply affecting all of Africa today: Western immigration, a growing trend among today’s young African demographic. Approximately 75% of young Africans express a desire to emigrate, with 38% favoring destinations in North America or Europe【 World Economic Forum )】【 Immigration Policy Lab 】. Yeah, yeah. So nerdy, I know, but it’s something to think about- So boring statistics class aside, the cast is impeccable- I find the Eso-Inem duo a force to reckon with: OMG, the chemistry and friendship between these characters is EXCEPTIONAL! As a married person, this theme really resonates. It’s not always about the tough times, but about the friend who’s on that boat with you. It’s a heartwarming lesson delivered beautifully. The film’s stellar cast also includes @esodike, @inemking , @ojomarvell , @anthonynwahiri , @iamqueennifa , and @josephoni2013 . The production crew is just as impressive with @esodike and @inemking as producers, @itsjblaze as director, @cisse_cinematography behind the camera, and many more talented individuals bringing this story to life. One of my favorite characters in this film is the enigmatic Mayorwa. Her underlying issue or motivation is never quite made clear, keeping us guessing. She is a physical manifestation of the hashtag #villagepeople and you certainly don’t want anyone like this in your friendship circle. Despite a few minor sound variations and a brief cut, the film’s quality is top-notch. I’d rate “WE MOVE” a solid 4/5. And hats off to Eso on his first film as Executive Producer!
