Beyond the Gates leads a strong showing for Black talent as the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards recognise achievements across drama, talk television and lifestyle programming.

When the nominations for the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards were unveiled, one programme immediately emerged as the story of the year: Beyond the Gates.
The CBS drama, the first new daytime soap opera in 25 years and the first with a majority-Black cast in more than three decades, secured a landmark nomination for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. Its recognition represents more than a successful debut; it signals a significant shift in a genre that has historically relied on Black audiences while rarely placing Black lives at the centre of its storytelling.
Yet Beyond the Gates is only part of a broader picture. Across drama, talk television and lifestyle programming, Black performers and hosts have earned some of the most notable nominations of the year.
Beyond the Gates leads a historic showing
In addition to its Best Drama nomination, Beyond the Gates produced two major acting contenders:
Karla Mosley - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series
Tamara Tunie - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series
For both actresses, the nominations mark their first-ever Daytime Emmy recognition.
Mosley has built a career spanning musical theatre, soap operas and television drama, while Tunie arrives with decades of acclaimed screen work and a commanding dramatic presence. Their simultaneous nominations underscore the strength of Beyond the Gates’ ensemble and suggest that the industry is finally beginning to reward performances that have long deserved greater attention.
The series also produced another milestone nomination. Jasmine Burke earned her first Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2026 for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series, further highlighting the depth of Black talent represented within the show.
Jennifer Hudson and Sherri Shepherd recognised
The category for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host also features two prominent Black nominees:

Sherri Shepherd - Sherri
Jennifer Hudson has successfully transformed her career from Oscar-winning performer to daytime host, bringing empathy and warmth to celebrity interviews. Sherri Shepherd, meanwhile, continues a tradition of Black daytime broadcasting built on humour, relatability and direct audience engagement.
Her nomination arrives at a particularly poignant moment following the cancellation of Sherri, turning the recognition into both a celebration of her work and a reminder of the challenges facing Black-led daytime programmes.
The Duchess of Sussex earns first Emmy nomination
Another breakthrough came in Outstanding Lifestyle Program, where Netflix’s With Love, Meghan earned a nomination.
Hosted by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, the series blends cooking, gardening and domestic storytelling with celebrity guests and personal reflection. The nomination is Meghan’s first Emmy nomination, and it places her within a category that has traditionally been dominated by white lifestyle personalities.
Whether viewed as lifestyle entertainment or a broader cultural project, the recognition confirms that Meghan remains one of the most closely watched figures in contemporary television.

The nominations suggest that the industry is slowly expanding its understanding of who can occupy the centre of daytime storytelling.
At the heart of that transformation is Beyond the Gates, a series that has arrived not as a symbolic gesture, but as a fully realised drama capable of competing with the genre’s established giants.
For a medium built on daily routines and familiar formulas, this year’s Daytime Emmy nominations offer a rare and welcomed development: evidence that the future of daytime television may finally look more like the audience that has sustained it for generations.
