The groundbreaking historical film FESTAC '77 has been officially selected by the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) for an exclusive preview at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Set to debut as part of the African Cinema Showcase, the film promises to give global audiences a powerful glimpse into one of the most significant cultural milestones in modern African history—the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.

Produced by Adonis Production and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, FESTAC '77 is not just a film—it’s a celebration of African unity, artistic legacy, and cultural resistance. Through a richly layered narrative and a stunning visual recreation of the 1977 Lagos festival, the film weaves together the ambitions, politics, and creative forces that made FESTAC a symbol of Black excellence across the diaspora.
Speaking on the selection, Executive Producer Adonijah Owiriwa called the film "a reclamation of Africa’s rich history." He added: "This project was about revisiting a defining moment in African unity and cultural assertion. Through cinema, we are not only preserving our past but ensuring that the world engages with our stories on our terms."
Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group, emphasized the broader implications for African storytelling: "The Cannes selection is a great endorsement for the future of Africa in the global box office. For too long, African stories have been sidelined or misrepresented. This film represents a shift—a turning point in how African creativity is received and celebrated."
Prince Tonye Princewill, also Executive Producer of the film, shared his optimism for the growth of the industry: "FESTAC '77 reflects the progress we’ve made in production quality and ambition. We’re not just telling stories for African audiences anymore. We’re competing globally—in scale, storytelling, and technical artistry."
The Cannes screening marks a key moment in African cinema’s rise to global prominence, with FESTAC '77 positioned to lead the conversation. As the film heads toward its 2025 release, it’s clear that this is more than just a cinematic milestone—it’s a cultural statement.
