NAACP IMAGE AWARDS ADDS 10 NEW AFRICAN CATEGORIES: A CULTURAL BRIDGE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

With categories spanning film, television, and music, the Image Awards formally recognizes African storytelling for the first time in its 59-year history, and BET's broadcast partnership means the world will be watching.

The NAACP Images Award have never had a dedicated home for African film, television, or music. until now. For the 58th ceremony, the organization has introduced ten new African categories:
Outstanding African Album
Outstanding African New Artist
Outstanding African Song
Outstanding African Motion Picture
Outstanding Actor in an African Motion Picture
Outstanding Actress in an African Motion Picture
Outstanding Directing in an African Motion Picture
Outstanding African Television Series
Outstanding Actor in an African Television Series
Outstanding Actress in an African Television Series
It is the single largest structural expansion of the Image Awards toward the continent in the show's history.
The move brings the Image Awards' total category count to 108, spanning motion picture, television and streaming, recording, literature, and podcasts. The 58th show will also revive four daytime drama categories that had gone dormant, a reminder that even as the Image Awards grows outward, it's also rebuilding categories closer to home.
Submissions opened August 31 and closes November 13 at naacpimageawards.net. Nominees will be announced and public voting will open January 7, 2027, with voting closing February 1. A performance or project released between January 1 and December 31, 2026 qualifies. The ceremony date has not yet been announced.
Africans have been in the room before, just never with a category of their own
This is not African talent's first appearance at the Image Awards. Africans have been nominated for years, folded into general categories rather than recognized as their own lane. South African director Liesl Tommy earned a nomination for Respect in 2022. That same year, three African feature debuts, Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) from Nigerian twin brothers Arie and Chuko Esiri, The Gravedigger's Wife, and African America, competed together for Outstanding International Motion Picture. In 2025, Nigerian animated series Iwájú was nominated for Outstanding Animated Series, and the international song category became something of an Afrobeats showcase, with Davido, Tyla, Tems, and Wizkid all earning nods. Kenyan crime drama Kipkemboi picked up an Outstanding International Motion Picture nomination that same year.
In other words, the appetite and the talent were already showing up in the numbers. What didn't exist was a category built for them specifically, rather than one they had to share with the rest of the world outside the U.S. That's what changes now.
BET's role in bringing it to the world
BET has broadcast the NAACP Image Awards for decades, simulcasting the ceremony on CBS and serving as the NAACP's longstanding media partner in bringing the show to a national audience. BET's continued presence as broadcast partner means these new African categories won't just live in a press release, they'll be presented on the same stage, in front of the same audience, that has made the Image Awards appointment viewing for Black America for years. That distribution matters. A category is a gesture; a category broadcast to BET and CBS's combined audience is a signal.
Why this matters beyond the trophy
The NAACP created the Image Awards in 1967 to answer an industry that erased or distorted Black life on screen. The founders understood something that still holds: the images a society consumes shape the dignity, opportunity, and respect it extends. Narrative isn't decoration, it determines how people are seen, and how they are treated.
That conviction is the founding conviction of Next Narrative Africa. The stories the world tells about Africa still shape everything from headlines to investment decisions to the continent's cost of capital. Research conducted with Parrot Analytics confirmed what these new categories now affirm on a global stage: audiences want African stories, and when the world changes what it watches, it changes how it values Africa and Africans.
Seen that way, these ten categories are more than a programming update. They're a formal acknowledgment, from one of the most established institutions in Black American cultural life, carried to air by one of the most established Black media networks, that African film, television, and music are no longer adjacent to the diaspora conversation. They're central to it.

The ceremony date for the 58th NAACP Image Awards hasn't been announced yet. What's locked in so far is the lead-up calendar: submissions closed November 13, nominating committee voting runs December 4–18, and nominees will be announced as public voting opens January 7, 2027, with voting closing February 1, 2027. The show itself typically lands in late February, and the 57th ceremony was held February 28, 2026, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, so a late-February 2027 date is the likely window, though nothing is official yet.
