The pride has gathered. Tonight, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King Prequel premiered in dazzling style at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, bringing nostalgia, star power, and a touch of the savanna to the red carpet.

Who showed up? Oh, just Beyoncé casually reminding everyone who runs the jungle (and the music charts), alongside the legendary John Kani—our beloved Rafiki himself—proving that wisdom ages like fine wine. Other stars of the film also graced the event, turning Hollywood

Boulevard into the Pride Lands for one magical evening. Also spotted was Blue Ivy (Kiara), Donald Glover (Simba) and others.

The prequel explores Mufasa’s origin story, diving into his journey from curious mandrill to the wise, staff-wielding sage we all cried over in The Lion King. (Seriously, don’t lie—you teared up during Circle of Life).

The movie drops in theatres on December 20th 2024, and trust us, we’ll be first in line (with snacks) to relive the story of everyone’s childhood. Whether you’re eight or wearing “grown-up pants,” don’t pretend you don’t know the script word-for-word.

At Black Film Wire, we’ll be reviewing MUFASA soon—expect some sharp critiques and a heap of love for the franchise that raised a generation. So, is the movie ready to live up to its royal legacy? Let’s find out.

#HakunaMatata, but also, bring tissues.
