Nearly a decade after the two companies first partnered in 2017, Shonda Rhimes and longtime producing partner Betsy Beers have renewed their partnership with Netflix, promising more of the stories that have made Shondaland a global force.

The partnership has already produced some of Netflix's most recognisable titles, from Bridgerton and its growing universe to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Inventing Anna and The Residence. Netflix's current slate also includes the fourth season of Bridgerton, with a fifth season in production.
For Rhimes, the renewal is about more than simply making more television. It is about having the creative freedom to tell stories on her own terms.
“For almost a decade, Netflix has provided Shondaland with the autonomy and support to tell our kind of stories, stories that both entertain and reflect diversity and humanity in a way that resonates with audiences around the world.”

Before Netflix, there was Grey's Anatomy.
Rhimes launched Shondaland in 2005 with the medical drama, which quickly became the foundation of an expanding television universe. The company went on to produce Private Practice, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Station 19, among others.
And importantly, when Rhimes moved Shondaland to Netflix in 2017, she didn't simply walk away from ABC.

The Netflix deal was structured around new stories and projects, while existing Shondaland hits including Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder continued airing on ABC. Netflix described the move as bringing Shondaland to the platform while allowing Rhimes and her team to expand their creative identity and audience.
That is part of what makes Rhimes particularly interesting from a business perspective. She has demonstrated an ability to build successful television IP while understanding that a production company does not have to be tied to a single outlet forever.
Shondaland has grown from a television production company into a broader media brand, expanding into digital publishing, podcasts and other forms of entertainment alongside its film and television work.
That creative autonomy has been central to the partnership. Since its 2017 launch, Shondaland's Netflix slate has demonstrated how stories rooted in diverse experiences can travel far beyond their original audience and become part of global pop culture.
Shondaland says audiences can expect more shows, movies and products as the partnership enters its next chapter.
Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, called Rhimes' creative vision “incomparable,” pointing to the cultural impact of projects coming out of the partnership.
“Few creative partnerships have shown what’s possible when a singular vision meets a global stage,”
Bajaria said, noting that Shondaland's stories have influenced everything from fashion and music to wider culture.

From Bridgerton becoming a global phenomenon to the continued expansion of Shondaland's television universe, the partnership has already proven that a strong creative voice can thrive on a global platform without losing its identity.
Now, nearly ten years after the original deal, Netflix is betting on that voice all over again.
And honestly? We’re here for the next chapter.
