The Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) returns for its 16th edition, scheduled to take place from October 9 to 12, 2025, in San Jose, California. After a milestone 15th anniversary in 2024 that honored legends like Souleymane Cissé and brought together 85 films from 38 countries, this year’s festival promises to push the celebration of African voices even further. With 92 films from 32 countries, the lineup reflects the diversity, resilience, and creativity of African cinema today. Audiences can expect a wide range of narratives spanning features, documentaries, shorts, and animations, alongside an electric blend of culture, fashion, and live performances.

Among the standout films this year are three that are already generating buzz:
Osamede (Nigeria); A moving portrait of family, tradition, and resilience.
Mother’s Love (Nigeria); A heartfelt exploration of sacrifice and generational bonds.
Kimote (Uganda); A thought-provoking narrative rooted in identity and community.
Each of these films underscores the festival’s mission to provide authentic African stories that resonate globally.

SVAFF isn’t just about watching films; it’s a cultural immersion. Attendees can look forward to filmmaker Q&As, community conversations, live music and dance performances, a vibrant fashion show, and the bustling African market. Families will also appreciate the welcoming atmosphere, making SVAFF one of the most inclusive festivals of its kind.
The festival will climax with the Closing & Awards Night at the Hammer Theatre on Sunday, October 12. This signature evening will honor outstanding filmmakers while showcasing one final round of unforgettable storytelling.
Last year’s celebration of Souleymane Cissé served as a reminder of the foundations of African cinema. This year, the excitement is all about what’s next, the bold, fresh voices carrying that legacy into the future.

As festival founder Chike Nwoffiah has often emphasized, SVAFF is more than a showcase; it’s a bridge between Africa and the world, between tradition and innovation. With this year’s expanded lineup, audiences should prepare to be transported, challenged, and inspired.
From Nigeria to Uganda, Senegal to South Africa, SVAFF 2025 promises a weekend of cinematic brilliance and cultural celebration in the heart of Silicon Valley.

The countdown is on. Grab your pass, join the celebration, and let Africa’s stories light up San Jose once again.
