Sister Act 3: Whoopi’s Back—But Who’s Joining the Choir?

After more than three decades, Sister Act is making a glorious comeback and the choir is (almost) back together again. Disney+ officially confirmed that Sister Act 3 is in development with Whoopi Goldberg reprising her iconic role as Deloris Van Cartier, the Vegas lounge singer turned undercover nun. Even more headline-grabbing? Tyler Perry is on board as producer. Yes, you read that right.

While the script is reportedly finished, we’re still waiting on casting confirmations and a release date. But at BFW, we already envision who should and must show up in this long-awaited third chapter.

The original Sister Act (1992) was a holy hit. Whoopi played Deloris, a lounge singer hiding out in a convent after witnessing a crime. There, she revives a sleepy choir of nuns, transforming them into a soulful, spirited gospel group. In Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), Deloris returns to help save a failing Catholic school, introducing us to a young Lauryn Hill and turning "Joyful, Joyful" into an anthem for the ages.
" “They have the script.” She added, “We’re hoping it’ll happen sometime this year.”"

Who’s Already Been Mentioned?
Whoopi herself has dropped some major hints:

Kathy Najimy (Sister Mary Patrick) is likely to return
Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert) might rejoin the sisterhood
The pope may or may not make a cameo (yes, the real one)
And as for new faces? Whoopi’s name-dropped a dream lineup:
Keke Palmer
Lizzo
Nicki Minaj
Frankly? We'd be blessed to see any one of them in full habit.

BFW’s Dream Casting Wish List:
Let’s get speculative:
Angela Bassett as the new Mother Superior? Commanding, regal, and could absolutely tell a room of wayward nuns to "fall in line."
Fantasia Barrino as the gospel soloist who gives Sister Mary Robert a run for her money.
MJ Rodriguez as the convent’s progressive new music teacher? A mix of elegance and edge.
Billy Porter as the rival choir director from the fancy downtown cathedral? Think sequins, sass, and a spiritual mic drop.
And of course, a Lauryn Hill cameo. Even just for the culture.

Having Tyler Perry produce Sister Act 3 is definitely an interesting move. His track record with faith-based storytelling is solid, though fans are divided. Will we see Madea pop in for a pew-side prayer? Let’s hope not. But maybe Perry will bring a fresh gospel groove to the franchise—and elevate some lesser-known Black talent in the process.
Final Benediction
While the plot of Sister Act 3 is still under wraps, one thing’s clear: this film is more than a sequel. It’s a revival. A chance to remind the world that joy, music, and sisterhood still slap. And in this era of reboots, we say: if it ain't broke, give it a praise break.
So Disney, Tyler, Whoopi give us harmonies, heart, and holy high notes. And please, cast Lauryn. Amen.
