The 78th Cannes Film Festival, from May 13 to 24, 2025, in Cannes, France, showcases global cinematic artistry and is a significant platform highlighting Black creativity and narratives. This year, the festival offers numerous opportunities for Black filmmakers, artists and audiences to engage with stories that resonate with their experiences and heritage.
Historic Nigerian Debut: My Father's Shadow

Making a landmark entry, My Father's Shadow by Nigerian-British director Akinola Davies Jr. is set to premiere in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section on May 18. This film marks the first time a Nigerian production has been selected for Cannes' Official Selection. Starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, the narrative unfolds during the pivotal 1993 Nigerian presidential election, exploring themes of family and identity in Lagos. The film's inclusion signifies a growing recognition of African stories on the global stage.
The "Black At Cannes" initiative will continue to champion Black representation in the creative industries. This year, they introduced the African Creative Fund, designed to support African creatives in the advertising and creative sectors. The fund offers sponsorships for entries to the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity 2025 and includes an all-expenses-paid trip for three individuals to attend the festival. This initiative not only provides financial support but also aims to enhance the visibility of African creative work on an international platform.
