Just in.
Imagine the brilliant mind of an eleven-year-old Black boy on a 19th-century sugar plantation — now give him a hot air balloon and a passport to the unknown. That's the premise of Washington Black, Hulu’s new limited series premiering July 23, 2025. And yes, it stars Emmy-winner Sterling K. Brown, who also executive produces.

Based on Esi Edugyan’s bestselling novel, Washington Black follows George Washington “Wash” Black as he escapes brutal colonial life and embarks on a globe-spanning journey of scientific discovery, freedom, and self-definition. Think: steampunk meets historical reckoning — with heart.

The series also stars Ernest Kingsley Jr. as Wash, with a powerhouse supporting cast including Iola Evans, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Rupert Graves, and Tom Ellis. Behind the scenes, showrunners Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Kimberly Ann Harrison (with executive producer Wanuri Kahiu, among others) promise a visually lush, emotionally charged ride.
Coming to Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, Washington Black brings a needed reimagining of Black boyhood, science, and survival. We’ll be watching.
