The African film industry is in mourning following the heartbreaking passing of Alex Ekubo, one of Nollywood’s most recognizable and beloved screen stars, who reportedly died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40. News of his passing has sent shockwaves across the entertainment industry, with colleagues, fans, and filmmakers paying tribute to an actor remembered not only for his talent and charisma, but also for his kindness, elegance, and generosity of spirit.

For over a decade, Alexx Ekubo stood as one of Nollywood’s defining leading men, effortlessly moving between romance, comedy, drama, and commercial blockbusters with a screen presence that audiences across Africa connected with deeply. From films such as Conversations in Transit, Afamefuna, Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Diary of a Lagos Girl, and Lagos Cougars, he built a career marked by versatility, charm, and emotional sincerity.

Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor first gained national attention after emerging as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before transitioning fully into film. Over the years, he became one of the most visible faces of contemporary African cinema, admired for his fashion presence, professionalism, and ability to connect with audiences both on and off screen.

Beyond the spotlight, those who worked with him often described him as warm-hearted, deeply respectful, and supportive of younger creatives navigating the industry. His humanitarian work and advocacy efforts also earned him recognition outside entertainment, reflecting a career built not only on fame, but on impact.

His last Instagram post dated back to December 2024, and in the months that followed, growing concern emerged among fans and colleagues over his prolonged absence from public life and social media, with many expressing prayers and hope for his well-being.

Nollywood does not simply mourn an actor. It mourns a cultural figure whose smile, talent, and presence became part of a cinematic era.

Alex Ekubo leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances, enduring influence, and a body of work that will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

May he rest in peace.
