What to Watch in September 2026: Black and African Films and TV to Add to Your Watchlist.

The new month, September, is bringing a little bit of everything, including nostalgic TV, big Hollywood reunions, Nollywood thrillers, and a few African classics getting another chance with a new audience.
1. Yesterday - September 1
First up is this film that may be more than two decades old, but still feels worth revisiting. Darrell Roodt's 2004 South African drama Yesterday follows a young mother, played by Leleti Khumalo, who discovers she is HIV-positive and is determined to live long enough to see her daughter start school. The film was South Africa's first commercial feature-length production in Zulu and went on to become the country's first film nominated for an Oscar, which is amazing.

2. By Any Means - September 4
Elegance Bratton's By Any Means takes us to 1960s Mississippi, where a young Black FBI agent is sent to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders and is forced to work alongside notorious mafia hitman Greg Scarpa. Based on a true story, the film brings together crime, history and the complicated question of justice. It features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Giancarlo Esposito, LaChanze and LisaGay Hamilton
And is produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Alex Lebovici, Chester Algernal Gordon, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee
Where to watch: In cinemas from September 4.
3. Why Did I Get Married Again? - September 9
Sixteen years after Why Did I Get Married Too?, Tyler Perry is bringing the gang back together and this time, they are heading to Italy for a wedding. The couples reunite for the destination wedding of Marcus and Angela's daughter, only to discover that old relationship issues have a way of travelling with you.

The real question is whether the original chemistry can still work all these years later. Add a wedding, Italy and a new generation of relationship drama, and there is plenty of potential for the kind of messy family entertainment Tyler Perry does best.
4. Invitation to Kill - September 11
Nollywood is bringing the suspense. Directed by Chuks “Big Tiger” Obaze, Invitation to Kill follows Julian, an agro-businessman and devoted father caught between love, betrayal, fatherhood and the desire for redemption. The thriller explores loss, resilience and the consequences of unresolved pain. Featuring Kalu Ikeagwu and an ensemble cast
Where to watch: Cinemas across Nigeria and Ghana from September 11.

5. A Different World - September 24
Hillman College is back with Netflix's new A Different World sequel series follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at the fictional HBCU her parents once attended. Some familiar faces are returning too, including Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell.

6. Black Market - September 26
And finally we have Nollywood’s big one, Black Market.
The new film from Rixel Studios is set to premiere at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on September 26, with the producers attempting to bring 50,000 people together for a single screening in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous film audience.
