September 2025 is shaping up to be one of Nollywood’s most exciting months yet, with a rich mix of romance, comedy, crime, and even fantasy animation gracing cinemas and streaming platforms. From star-studded chaotic romances to culture-rooted love stories and magical adventures, here are the Nollywood titles you won’t want to miss this September.

In Cinemas – September 5, 2025
If you love your drama served with romance and a dash of chaos, A Weekend Fiasco is a must-watch. Directed by Samuel ‘Bigsam’ Olatunji and produced by Damilola Osikoya with DJ Woske as supervising producer, the film throws viewers into a romantic getaway gone terribly wrong.
The star-studded cast reads like a Nollywood hall of fame: Ini Edo, Alexx Ekubo, Odunlade Adekola, Liquorose, Yvonne Jegede, Chimezie Imo, Lizzy Jay, Bro Bouche, Waje, Diva Gold, and Ilebaye Odiniya.

In Cinemas – September 5, 2025
Also opening on September 5 is Dara: A Port Harcourt Love Story, a heartfelt Port Harcourt romance directed by Bobby Rak and produced by Emmanuel Edi under MMAC Company Productions, with Blue Pictures Entertainment serving as the distributor. Unlike the glitzy Lagos romances Nollywood is known for, Dara brings audiences into the heart of Port Harcourt, exploring love, identity, loyalty, and survival against a gritty backdrop.
The film stars Tomi Ojo, Tina Mba, Bless Smile, Kage The Actor, Prince Ren (Jagaban), Riyo David, Abobi Eddieroll and Divine Okechukwu.

In Cinemas – September 5, 2025
Opening on the same day as A Weekend Fiasco and Dara, Over the Bridge brings an intense, psychological punch. Directed by Tolulope Ajayi and written and produced by Tosin Otudeko alongside Bose Oshin (with executive producers including Joke Silva and Guy Hibbert), the narrative follows Folarin (Ozzy Agu), a Lagos investment banker whose life unravels after a major infrastructure scandal implicates him. Battling alcoholism, panic attacks, and moral collapse, he spirals into a crisis from which redemption may not be assured.

In Nigerian Cinemas – September 19, 2025
A landmark for Nollywood, My Father’s Shadow marks director Akinola Davies Jr.’s feature-length debut (co-written with his brother Wale Davies). Starring Sope Dirisu as the father and real-life young brothers Godwin Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo, the film unfolds over one day in Lagos during the politically charged aftermath of Nigeria’s 1993 election.
The film made history as the first Nigerian feature selected for the official line-up at Cannes (Un Certain Regard), earning a Caméra d’Or Special Mention. Developed with BBC Film, BFI, Element Pictures, Fatherland Productions, Crybaby, and distributed in North America, UK, Ireland, and Turkey by MUBI, it premieres theatrically across Nigeria via FilmOne Entertainment.

Expected in Cinemas – September 26, 2025
Closing out the month is Gingerrr, a star-packed comedy-drama that has Nollywood fans buzzing online. The ensemble cast includes Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, Olu Deno Adebamowo, Adebowale Adedayo (Mr. Macaroni), Lateef Adedimeji, Odunlade Adekola, Bisola Aiyeola, Ayoola Akinyoola, Fathia Balogun, Shaffy Bello, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Timini Egbuson and Michael O.
While details about the plot and production team remain under wraps, Gingerrr is already building anticipation as one of the biggest theatrical releases of the month. With so many comedic heavyweights and Nollywood favourites in the lineup, expect laughs, drama, and plenty of energy when it hits cinemas on September 26.

Streaming September 26, 2025, on Showmax
Nollywood isn’t just about live-action this September, animation takes centre stage with Iyanu: The Age of Wonders, the much-anticipated African fantasy series created, directed and co-written by Roye Okupe and produced by Lion Forge Entertainment and YouNeek Studios.
This epic follows Iyanu, a teenage heroine destined to save her people in a magical version of Yoruba mythology. The voice cast is stacked with star power: Shaffy Bello as Emi, Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori, Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Okey Jude as Biyi, Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye, Ike Ononye as Ishe, Babajide Oyekunle as Joba, and Sisan Victor-Woko as Dara.

You might have also heard chatter about The Waiter, AY Makun’s action-comedy directed by Toka McBaror. While it’s been trending, the movie actually premiered back in December 2024, not September 2025. Featuring an impressive cast including AY, Regina Daniels, Toke Makinwa, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Deyemi Okanlawon and Shaffy Bello, it’s still worth a watch, but not part of this month’s fresh releases.
Conclusion
September 2025 is delivering a Nollywood feast in Romance, Cultural depth, love, Comedy, star power, Epic African fantasy and chaos, whether you’re heading to the cinemas or streaming from home, Nollywood is proving yet again that its storytelling power knows no bounds.
