October 22, 2025 - IDIA, a powerful and visually striking short film by Nigerian-born filmmaker Winifred Iguwa, held a special screening in the United Kingdom as part of York St John University’s Black History Month celebrations on October 21, 2025, ahead of its official world premiere at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos this November 2025.

The event brought together students, faculty, and guests, including Ernestine Gheyoh Ndzi, Associate Dean of Law and Policing, and Tracy Willits, Film Director and Senior Lecturer in Media Production, alongside other distinguished attendees. The screening received an overwhelmingly positive reception, with audiences commending the film’s emotional depth and its evocative portrayal of cultural identity and empowerment.

Filmed entirely in the United Kingdom, IDIA explores themes of heritage, self-acceptance, and identity. The story follows a young aspiring dancer who reconnects with her ancestral roots to rediscover her confidence and voice. Inspired by the legacy of Queen Idia of the Benin Kingdom (Nigeria), the film fuses modern and traditional dance, Benin-inspired music, and bold visual storytelling to create a deeply immersive cinematic experience.
“IDIA was born out of a need to tell a story about finding strength in one’s heritage,” says director Winifred Iguwa. “It’s a reminder that our history and culture hold the power to heal and transform us.”

Following its York screening, IDIA will host another exclusive showing at York St John University’s London campus on October 23, 2025, before celebrating its world premiere at AFRIFF 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria (November 2–8, 2025), marking the start of its international festival journey.
