In a world where Black stories in animation are still fighting for mainstream recognition, Iyanu: Child of Wonder is a game-changer. Created by Roye Okupe and based on the graphic novel series by Okupe and Godwin Akpan, this upcoming superhero-action animated series is set to premiere on Cartoon Network on April 5, 2025, followed by April 6 on Max.
Bringing Iyanu to life is a stellar cast of acclaimed African actors. Serah Johnson leads as Iyanu, capturing the essence of a young hero discovering her identity. The supporting cast includes: Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye, Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori, Blossom Chukwujekwu as Kanfo (Toye’s father), Stella Damasus as Sewa, Shaffy Bello as Emi, also known as “The One Mother” and Ike Ononye as Elder Alapani

This lineup not only enhances the authenticity of the story but also showcases the wealth of talent within the Black film industry.
For decades, Black animation has been underrepresented in mainstream media, with few projects truly embracing African culture, history and mythology. Iyanu takes things further by focusing on African mythology as the foundation of its narrative.
This series joins the growing movement of Afrofuturism and African fantasy, bringing to screen the vibrant worlds and powerful figures often left out of Western storytelling. Iyanu is more than just a children’s show, it is a cultural milestone that reflects the richness of Yoruba folklore and the global demand for diverse stories.
As we anticipate Iyanu’s premiere, one thing is clear: the future of Black cinema is bright, bold, and unapologetically African.

Mark your calendars for April 2025 is the beginning of a new era.
