Beyond Diplomas: Chike Nwoffiah Launches New Book on Decolonizing the African Mind

Chike Nwoffiah, founder of the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF), drew his Nigerian and African community to San Jose to celebrate a work years in the making, one that carries his advocacy for African storytelling from the screen to the page.
Chike Nwoffiah (Founder and Executive Director, Silicon Valley African Film Festival; director, A Killing in Choctaw, Sabar, and Life Is a Dance, IMDb) has spent over a decade building platforms for African filmmakers to tell their own stories. Over the weekend, he added a new chapter to that work, celebrating the launch of his first book, Beyond Diplomas: Decolonizing the African Mind for Transformational Leadership, at the Hyatt House San Jose Airport.
A Launch Rooted in Legacy
The event, held Saturday, August 15, drew friends, creatives, community leaders, and supporters into what became less a traditional book signing than a gathering around legacy, transformational leadership, Nigerian culture, and the work of reclaiming narrative. The afternoon featured a keynote conversation, the official book unveiling, a food and beverage reception, and live music.
Beyond Diplomas explores leadership, identity, education, and Africa's future, making the case for mental emancipation, servant leadership, and culturally grounded solutions to the challenges facing Africa and its global diaspora.
What Guests Took From It
Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Nneka Chukwu described the book as an invitation to reconsider inherited ideas of leadership and turn knowledge into meaningful impact, pointing to Nwoffiah's use of concepts like Sankofa and Ubuntu to push readers toward reflecting on their histories and leading with greater purpose.
Leena Mendoza's reflections centered on the room itself, the ceremony, the food, the way guests welcomed and celebrated one another, describing the evening as a fuller experience of Nigerian culture and community than the book launch format usually allows.
The room included Dr. Angela Ikeme, Dr. Ngozi Obilor, Dr. Obinna Anya, Teresa Chapman, Dr. Veronica Ufoegbune, Gozie Okwelume, Deka Dike, Governor Soludo, Robert Lindo, and Meredith Curry Nuñez, among others.
From Screen to Page
For Nwoffiah, the book extends work that has defined his career since he founded SVAFF in 2010: giving African and diasporic voices control over their own narratives. Now in its 17th year, SVAFF has grown into one of the more established platforms in the U.S. dedicated to African cinema, built on the same premise driving Beyond Diplomas, that Africans should define Africa's story on their own terms, whether through film or the written word.
We'll be watching to see how Beyond Diplomas extends the conversations Nwoffiah has spent years building space for on screen. The book is now available on Amazon.
