Apply Now: $40M Next Narrative Africa Fund Opens Call for Film & TV Script Grants

ree

Attention filmmakers, screenwriters, and visionaries: the Next Narrative Africa Fund (NNAF) has officially launched its first-ever open call for film and television script submissions—and the opportunity is as ambitious as the stories it seeks to tell.

Announced in June, the NNAF script development grants are open to creatives of African and African-diasporan descent who are developing commercially viable, globally appealing stories with strong ties to Africa. This is part of the fund’s wider $40 million initiative launched at the UN General Assembly, aimed at transforming how African stories are financed, developed, and distributed.

HEVA Fund is no longer involved. The fund is now operated solely by Next Narrative Africa.

What You Need To Know:

For this inaugural call, the Fund is specifically looking for:

Production Info:

  • Narrative feature films or episodic series with an African nexus

  • Storytelling rooted in the African or African diasporan experience

  • Projects that influence positive social norms, especially those benefiting women and girls

  • Narratives that carry international distribution potential and impact

  • Principal photography to be completed 50% or more in Africa

Alignment:

Submissions must also align with NNAF’s core mission: shifting the global perception of Africa and its people through authentic, unapologetic storytelling. Whether you’re working on a character-driven drama, a genre-bending thriller, or a pan-African series, if your work speaks boldly to culture and community, this call is for you.

Deadlines:

  • Applications will be accepted until August 1, 2025, at 11:59 PM (local time).

  • To support potential applicants, the Fund is also hosting a live webinar and Q&A session on Monday, July 14, at 11:00 AM EDT. This session will break down eligibility, the selection process, and tips for a strong application.
